Record a received cheque with a receipt

A cheque enters the register through a receipt. Open Sales, then Receipts, and press Receipt. Choose the customer and amount and set Method (1) to Cheque. The fields Cheque no. (2), Drawn on (bank) and Due date (3) appear. Apply it to the invoices and press Save.

Do not use Record payment on the invoice for a post-dated cheque. Even if you choose Cheque there, the amount goes straight to the bank and never reaches the register. Cheques are kept in the base currency only.

Follow cheques in the register

Open the Banking page, then the Post-dated cheques tab. Cheques you received are under Received (1) and those you issued under Issued (2). The cards at the top show what Notes receivable and Notes payable hold and what falls due this week. Filter by Due to see what is coming up.

Deposit the cheque, then clear it

When you hand the cheque to the bank, press Deposit on its row and choose the Date and Bank account. When the money arrives, press Clear. Only now does the amount reach the bank in your books, and you can then match the bank line to this entry on the statement.

If the cheque bounces

Press Bounce, enter the Reason, and put anything the bank deducted in Bank charge. The receipt is reversed, the invoices reopen for the customer, and the fee posts to bank charges. If you hand the cheque back without presenting it, use Return to customer.
The receipt is reversed on today's date, even if the bounce date you entered is earlier. A receipt tied to a cheque cannot be voided from the receipts screen, only from the cheques register.

A cheque you issue to a supplier

The same steps from the other side. Open Purchases, then Payments, press Payment and set the method to Cheque. The supplier is settled now and the amount goes to notes payable. In the register under Issued, use Mark presented, then Clear when the bank pays it, or Cancel cheque if you take it back first.
