Build orders: from parts to product

Draw the components from stock, add labour and overheads, and bring the finished product in at its full cost.

This feature comes with certain plans. If it is not in your menu, it is not in your business's plan.

Open a new build

In Manufacturing open the Builds tab and press New build, or press Build it in the recipe window. Pick the Product, quantity and Date. Only items of type Assembly appear here, and the item must have a recipe. The form shows the Component cost when you pick the product. It does not refresh if you then change the quantity, and the actual cost appears on the build after saving.
A build draws from the Default warehouse and the product arrives there, and the form has no warehouse field. If the components sit in another warehouse, transfer them first.

Add the overheads

Press Overhead under Overheads (labour, power, …) for each cost. Pick the account the expense was recorded in, then type a description and amount. On completion the amount moves out of that account into the product's cost, so it is not counted as both an expense and a cost.

Choose how to run it

If the work finishes the same day, press Build now: the start and completion run together. If it will take time, press Save draft. A draft moves nothing and cannot be edited on screen, so if you made a mistake press Cancel and create a new build.

Start the build

Open the build and press Start. The components leave stock at their actual cost, and their value moves to the Work in progress account, meaning goods still being made.

After the start, a build cannot be cancelled: the only next step is Complete. If issuing more than is on hand is blocked and a component is short, the start stops with a Not enough stock message.

Complete the build

Press Complete. The overheads are added and the product enters stock at its full cost, with a Unit cost equal to the total cost divided by the quantity. The WIP journal and Journal buttons on the build open both entries.
