A discount on one line
Type the percentage in the Disc. % column (1) on the item line. The line total drops, and the totals box shows the gross and the discount.
A discount on the whole invoice
Type the amount, not a percentage, in Document discount (2). It is shared across the lines in proportion to their value, so revenue and VAT both fall, as in this example: 1,000 before discount, 100 off, and 15% VAT on the remaining 900.
| Account | Debit | Credit |
|---|---|---|
| Receivables | 1,035.00 | |
| Sales revenue | 900.00 | |
| VAT payable | 135.00 |
The totals box on the edit screen does not take this discount off while you type. Press Save draft to see the final figures on the invoice page before you issue it.
If approval is needed, or the discount comes late
- If your business has switched on approval for Discounted sales invoices, an invoice above the set percentage waits for sign-off before it can be issued.
- An issued invoice cannot be edited. A discount after the sale is made with a credit note and the reason Price adjustment or discount after sale.
